Jeep accessories, Compass, and Wrangler
SavageJeepUSA.com
is here to provide reliable and unbiased information on Jeep accessories.
Jeeps are the oldest off-road vehicles. In fact, their prototypes and
earliest incarnations first showed up during World War II as military
vehicles.
Nobody is quite sure what the origins are for the term, “Jeep.”
It is speculated that it came as a phonetic slurring of “GP.”
The “GP” designation would have come from either “Gov.
Purpose” or “General Purpose.” However, the Jeep has
always been designed for particular purposes as opposed to general ones.
Other people attribute the name to an association with Eugene the Jeep.
This character appeared along with Popeye in the Thimble Theatre comic
strip and was described as being able to “go anywhere.”
World War II soldiers may have given the vehicle this title due to that
affiliated ability.
The term was also used during World War I as slang for new recruits
as well as for new, unproven vehicles.
With all these possible stories, no one can tell how the Jeep got its
name. In addition to these different possible name origins, the marque
for these vehicles has had many different owners. It started in 1941
with the Willys, or the Willys-Overland Motors. This company also produced
the first Civilian Jeep. In 1953, it was sold to the Kaiser Motors Corporation.
The American Motors Corporation (AMC) was the next to own it, in 1970.
Chrysler Corporation bought out AMC in 1987.
More than 30 different Jeep models have been available to the public
since the 1940s. This is a good starting point when it comes to deciding
upon particular Jeep accessories. For that reason, Savage Jeep USA has
included specific pages dedicated to introducing the reader to the popular
Jeeps of today. Here are the models included:
•Jeep Wrangler – This model is the successor to the famous
World War II Jeep with its line coming through the Civilian Jeeps produced
by Willys. It made its debut in 1987, and was updated in both 1997 and
2007.
•Jeep Grand Cherokee – The Grand Cherokee was the first
Chrysler-badged Jeep product. It evolved from the smaller Jeep Cherokee
(XJ) into the mid-sized sport utility vehicle that it is today.
•Jeep Commander – This 7-passenger SUV was introduced in
2006. Its basic platform is the third generation Jeep Grand Cherokee,
although its design is very boxy in contrast.
•Jeep Compass – This model is a compact crossover, or crossover
utility vehicle (CUV). This means it takes its origins from a car design,
but also borrows SUV features. It is one of Jeep’s first crossover
SUVs and was introduced for the 2007 model year.
The many different Jeep accessories available may be designed for interior
or exterior vehicle use. Also, some accessories serve everyday purposes,
while others may specifically be Jeep off road accessories. Some examples
of accessories include keyless remote start-up, spot lights, roll-bars,
and winches. General interior accessories for most cars are also used,
such as DVD and MP3 players as well as satellite radio.
